An incredible amount of injured wildlife in WNY that need your help
Summer is here and unlike summer 2021 there is a lot more going on and people are starting to do things again which means more interactions with wildlife. There has been a recent upsurge in wildlife injuries and you have the opportunity to volunteer to help.
According to the organizers and staff of Messinger Woods Wildlife Education and Care Center…
We have over 200 animals in the hospital that need to be staffed 9-9. COVID has been very difficult for a group like Messinger Woods. No funding is made available to us and all the events we had scheduled could not continue. Our intake of wildlife has been overblown, including many animals from SPCA Wildlife that they have transferred including ducks, owls, hawks, hawks, opossums, and songbirds. We have two eagles arriving from Cornell (one that the SPCA has taken in and one that we admit) and we already have one in our care!
It’s an incredible amount of wild animals that need daily care. How can I help you? There are several ways. Donations are always welcome and after 2020, the need for financial assistance is greater than ever. If you want volunteer, on their website, Messinger Woods explains…
If you are able to commit to 4 hours once a week during this time, we would love to have you with us this season. If you are a student, we realize that you must be back in school by the end of August and that you will not be available until our facility is closed for the season. You DO NOT need to be a licensed wildlife rehabilitator to volunteer with Messinger Woods.
If you happen to see injured wildlife or suspect that something is wrong, it is best not to approach the animals right away. In some cases, like baby deer, the animals are fine and are intentionally left alone for their protection. Some animals can appear aggressive if injured. Contact Messinger Woods or New York State DEC for rehabilitation or assistance.
