SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – As the fireworks begin to fill the skies, some furry friends need your help. A local animal shelter is looking for people to talk to the animals – and also sing along to them.

It’s an effort to keep them calm during the noisy night of July 4th, one of the most stressful times of the year for pets.

Explosions and detonations from fireworks can be frightening and scare some dogs away.

“He can jump the fence, he can dig out of a fence, he can go through a fence,” said Janna Haynes, spokesperson for Bradshaw Animal Shelter.

The Sacramento County shelter is already starting to fill up with stray dogs.

“This season is absolutely one of the busiest times we’ve seen,” said Haynes.

They are therefore looking for volunteers to provide soothing entertainment for the animals on this Independence Day.

“We are asking the public who are willing to give their time on July 4th to come and spend an hour and a half either reading to our dogs, singing to them, or playing instruments to help them stay calm during the worst of the day. fireworks, ”said Haynes.

They first launched this program in 2019 and say it’s a success.

“It absolutely works,” Haynes said.

From acoustic guitars to classic book tales, shelter workers say individual attention helps calm dogs – whose keen sense of hearing can detect even distant fireworks.

“We have seen some very fearful dogs strapped to the back of their kennels moving slowly, crawling as they read,” said Haynes. “And they’re going to sit right by the door and fall asleep.”
