Rutabaga thrives 1 year after completing 853-day stay in Alabama shelter

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WSFA) – It’s been a year since Rutabaga, a now 5-year-old pit bull/bull terrier mix, found her forever home after spending an astonishing 853 days at an eastern animal shelter. ‘Alabama. Since Friday is National Rescue Dog Day, we thought we’d check and see how she was doing.

Apparently, if the photos are any indication, she lives life.

Ruti, as he is called, made headlines across the country follow a profile story about his situation a year ago. The shelter was almost immediately inundated with adoption requests, but it was an east Alabama couple with a passion for rescues who brought her home.

After 853 days, its adoption was final.

“She goes to dog daycare once a week,” said owner Jessica Ventiere, “loves to play with her three dog brothers and loves licking the foil when Dad smokes ribs on the weekends.”

“Spoiled rotten, basically,” Ventiere added.
