Sophie and other pets for adoption from Phoenix-area shelters

Every year, about 6.5 million pets enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of these, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets available for adoption at shelters across the valley. To check the status of a particular animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Sophie: a feline diva

Interested adopters can view available animals, like Sopie, and book an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.

Proof that you are only the age you feel, Sophie is an absolutely gorgeous 12-year-old long-haired kitten who was brought to the Arizona Humane Society as her owner. Unfortunately, this was due to her and the other pets in the house not getting along. Turns out this diva wants all the attention on herself.

Due to a few teeth that needed fixing, this sweet girl received dental treatment at AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital and is now on the hunt for the perfect forever home. For Sophie, her idea of a big house is one that will give her lots of scratches on her chin and brush her luxurious fur. After all, it’s not easy to keep up with that long, gorgeous coat.

Despite being a self-proclaimed prima donna, with a little patience and love, Sophie quickly warms up to her human friends. The gorgeous kitty will even chirp at you when she wants more love and is the queen of the head bunters when she’s not giving enough attention. With June being National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, Sophie hopes people looking to add a furry friend to their family consider all of the many loving and unique felines in need of loving homes.

Galadriel, or Gala for short, is a thin 5-year-old tortie and tips the scales at seven pounds. This cute girl would love a quiet home and would make an ideal pet for senior cat lovers. She’s as sweet as can be, a bit shy. She has one of those silent meows and sometimes she’ll make a squeaky sound, her idea of talking.

Gala is not afraid of being picked up and loves to be brushed. Best of all, it’s a lap cat. She looks forward to her canned food, but obviously doesn’t overdo it.

Daisy: an adorable blunder

Interested adopters can view available animals, like Daisy, and book an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.

Adorable Daisy is as cute as her name suggests and an even bigger goof than her picture shows. The huge love bug was handed over to the Arizona Humane Society in April after finding out she’d rather have all eyes on her and not let anyone get the shred of love from her people that she deserves. Quite rightly, of course!

The 3-year-old boxer is just one of many pets adopted by AHS and returned for a number of reasons, but a great example of why the shelter has a 100% adoption guarantee. This ensures that there is a perfect fit not only for the adopting family, but also that the animal has every chance of being able to find the perfect home for them too. A win-win for all involved.

Those who have been lucky enough to know Daisy say she is a shy but charming pup who would love a home where she can thrive. As a very intelligent and energetic pup, she also likes to have lots of puzzle toys and slow feeders so she not only gets tasty treats, but also allows her to use her brain with lots of mental stimulation. Plus, Daisy’s nubby tail really gets activated when she gets her favorite type of pet – booty scratches!

How to adopt: Arizona Humane Society Matchmaking Virtual Adoptions by Appointment are available to place pets with their families forever. Interested adopters can view available animals, like the diligent Daisy, and book an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.
