The Red Cross is working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help victims of the storm in Florida
In the week since Hurricane Ian hit Florida, the American Red Cross and its partners have worked tirelessly to provide food, shelter and comfort to those dealing with the heartbreaking devastation left by this historic storm.
Many neighborhoods that housed retirees on fixed incomes and mobile home parks have become unrecognizable. Poor conditions – including congested roads and heavy traffic – still prevent people from getting help. With the help of our partners, we are reaching out to offer relief and support so that no one faces this difficult time alone.
RED CROSS RESPONSE Read more about our response here. On Wednesday evening, more than 2,100 people sought refuge in at least 16 Red Cross and partner shelters. Most residents of our shelters are around 70 years of age or older; many have complex health conditions and disabilities; and they lost everything they owned to Hurricane Ian.
With the help of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, four mobile kitchens now prepare tens of thousands of hot meals each day. More than 100 Red Cross emergency response vehicles are on the road delivering these meals and relief supplies to people in need in the hardest hit areas.
Red Cross disaster relief shelters and posts – at 36 different locations – are open where people can stay or get food, relief supplies and other assistance. Trained volunteers also provide health and mental health support to families who have suffered unimaginable losses. This includes help with coping with new challenges, managing medical conditions, caring for wounds or injuries, and replacing prescription drugs or other essential medical equipment like canes and wheelchairs.
Nearly 1,600 Red Crosses from all 50 states and the District of Columbia are supporting relief efforts.
Together with our partners, we provided more than 355,000 meals and snacks, and some 68,000 comfort kits and other relief items like cleaning supplies.
Red Cross teams are also beginning to compile more detailed residential assessments, including the number of houses affected and the extent of that damage. This essential information will be used to plan the support families may need in the weeks and months ahead.
HOW TO GET HELP If you need a safe place to stay or a hot meal, find open shelters on redcross.org, the free Red Cross emergency app, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS ( 800-733-2767) and selecting the disaster option. You can also find shelters by following local authorities in your county and city on social media or by monitoring local news.
Anyone affected by the storm is urged to stop at a shelter for information, a hot meal, phone charging, relief supplies and other essential aid. The Red Cross helps anyone in need after a disaster, and everyone is welcome in our shelters. All disaster assistance is free and we don’t require people to show ID to enter a shelter – just their name and where they lived before the disaster.
Our workers will do everything possible to comfortably accommodate service animals and pets. If you are going to a shelter, please bring your own animal cage, supplies, medications, and food whenever possible.
Depending on the situation, pets may need to be housed in a different location with the support of animal welfare groups. Please consider visiting redrover.org/hurricaneian for additional pet resources.
Report missing loved ones on Missing.FL.gov, and report yourself or your loved ones as found and safe on Safe.FL.gov. Residents of Lee and Charlotte counties can find information about emergency roof coverings provided by the US Army Corps of Engineers at BlueRoof.us.

PLEASE GIVE BLOOD Dangerous weather conditions and flooding canceled dozens of blood drives and around 1,000 blood and platelet donations were not collected. People in unaffected areas of the country – especially those with type O blood types – are urged to donate blood now to help ensure that patients in affected areas continue to have access to life-saving blood.
